This course offers a comprehensive exploration of the social sciences through the dual lenses of Western and traditional Indigenous approaches, focusing on law, philosophy (both Western and Indigenous), religious studies, and wisdom traditions. Emphasizing the rich cultural heritage of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples in British Columbia, Canada, the course delves into historical and contemporary issues facing these communities. Students will examine how Indigenous cultures adapt to global changes, explore their significant contributions to British Columbia and Canada, and critically analyze legal frameworks, philosophical perspectives, religious practices, and wisdom teachings. Through case studies and original texts, the course aims to foster a deep understanding of how Indigenous perspectives enrich and expand the scope of the social sciences, cultivating skills in critical thinking and cross-cultural analysis.
