This course provides an overview of the foundational principles of Early Childhood Education (ECE), focusing on Indigenous ECE in BC, such as Aboriginal Head Start. It covers the definition of young children, the variety of programs available, the educator’s role in the education process, and current trends in ECE. The goal is to equip students with the knowledge to apply fundamental ECE theories to their practice and develop their own perspective and philosophy of early childhood education and development. Students will explore ECE ethics, Indigenous traditional values in child-rearing and teaching, instructional and caregiving methods to support the healthy development of young children, as well as current licensing practices and regulations for ECE.
